The Bleeding Lance
the spear of Lugh · the lance of Longinus
A white lance that bleeds from its tip, carried before the graal in Chrétien's procession and never explained by him. The Celtic dossier offers Lugh's spear, irresistible in battle, stood head-down in a cauldron of blood; the Christian recoding makes it the lance of Longinus that opened Christ's side. In the Post-Vulgate it becomes the instrument of the Dolorous Stroke — the sacred weapon misused, and three kingdoms wasted by one blow.
The lance is the vessel's shadow: where the graal feeds and heals, the lance wounds and avenges. The tradition keeps them in one procession because it will not separate the two faces of the sacred.
